This lesson approaches the subject of immigration and migrant life and experience in the US through the novel The Unknown Americans by Cristina Henriquez. The novel is fantastic, as it is written in accessible language and addresses numerous issues with regard to immigration.
This lesson includes: an outline of the novel and discussion questions through a powerpoint; reading questions that may be assigned for homework or as an exam (one question per chapter); a "Meet the Neighbors" activity where students introduce the class to a character they choose at random; and a "Juror Judgment" activity based on the author's own motives to challenge the reader to consider who is at fault for the novel's tragic ending.
