This document includes ten possible analysis topics for Miller's The Crucible; all of these topics include a research element. In developing these prompts, I have tried to go beyond the basic thematic approach (the importance of a good name) or those that focus on play as a reflection of the McCarthy era. While the latter of these is included on this list, the remaining essays encourage students to move into feminist analysis and new historicism. As such, there are three possible feminist analysis topics and several others that require an understanding of Puritan culture/religion, as well as the historical period/characters in question. All of these topics are argumentative, and although I require only a three page paper, you may, of course, make whatever changes you like.
