This is a 2 day lesson plan that introduces sketchbooks into your classroom. It also introduces how to do a short 3-5 minute drawing practice at the beginning of each class period. These few minutes of mindfulness not only promote drawing skills but it has an amazing effect on student behavior and classroom management. This has been a total game changer for me. I have been doing this practice for 2 years with my students K-8. And it teaches the students how to be ok with practicing in art. Yes, I think we have gotten past the "everything has to be perfect" stage! And it has freed up some wonderful work. Kids are more relaxed and ready to learn after working their drawing muscles for a few minutes at the beginning of class. This is a wonderful way to start out the year! But you can also introduce the practice without using the whole lesson plan.
