This lesson for middle to high school students includes a PowerPoint which briefly explains the amygdala, hippocampus, and pre-frontal cortex, as well as how the amygdala responds to danger and stress. For example, what happens in your brain when a tiger crosses your path on the sidewalk? After the presentation the students begin the worksheet by writing down what they remember about the brain and answering questions. This is followed by mindfulness practice, which is cued on the worksheet with a “Let’s Practice” picture. I will generally begin the mindfulness practice by leading a calming exercise (like a body scan), followed by a talk or visualization based on the lesson of the day. This is followed by a written reflection, and a challenge for the week. Includes 2-page worksheet and 10-slide PowerPoint.

This PowerPoint and worksheet is designed to support educators who are teaching mindfulness, whether in small groups or classrooms. In my own experience teaching mindfulness to high schoolers, I found that some students needed a little more structure to keep them focused on the mindfulness lessons, especially after we had been practicing for a while. They needed something other than just listening to me talk at the front of the room! I designed these worksheets to keep the students engaged during the lessons, and have found myself quite moved at the honesty in which they express themselves in the questions and the reflection.
