The notion of mindfulness has the capacity to positively influence the atmosphere of a classroom by helping students become more conscious of themselves and their environment. This sampler is from the first in a series on 'Mindfulness'. The 'Mindfulness' titles include; Mindfulness - an introduction, Mindfulness - the classroom, Mindfulness - behavior, Mindfulness - study skills and Mindfulness - learning styles.
There are generally seven session in each category. Students are encouraged to simply spend five minutes of time reflecting on a given focus which might center on who they are or how they study. A brief audio is given to stimulate their thinking followed by an interlude which allows them to reflect. A follow up activity is provided but this isn't mandatory as there is no prescribed outcome or assessment that must be reached. Mindfulness has a simple goal of allowing students to grow through contemplation and reflection and, by so doing, build a more productive classroom environment.
