Your students (especially your boys) love Minecraft. Capitalize on that popularity with this fun literacy game.
Minecraft Bump - Dolch Sight Word Reading Board Game comes with 13 different board games with almost all of the 220 Dolch Sight Words plus four pages that focus on letter identification--lower case, capital, mixed, and both. Each board has a set of 25 sight words for grades K-3. Bonus blank copy of the board game to write in your own sight words, letters, etc...!
Cut out the appropriate two sheets of sight words or letters plus chance cards on page two. Each player gets 10 markers of the same color. Pull a card from the pile. If the player can read the letter, place a marker on that letter. Another player can bump them off if they get the same letter. However, if a player draws that letter twice they can lock it with two of their markers stacked and can no longer be bumped. First player to use all ten cubes wins.
Don’t have markers? Use coins, chocolate chips, mini marshmallows, checkers, etc… instead.
The first four pages focus on letter identification—lower case, capital, mixed, and both. The remaining board games utilizes the Dolch sight word list. The Dolch sight word list is 220 of the most frequently used words. The first 25 words are typically for Kindergarten. The next 100 are usually for first graders. The remaining 100 are for second graders. Many of these words cannot be sounded out and therefore must be memorized. In addition, these are words that students must be able to read and write quickly.
This in class or at home game supports classroom learning by practicing these high frequency sight words.
