Empathy just might be the most important thing we can foster in our students as populations age, poverty grows and countries are on the verge of deep divisions. Empathy is like a muscle and can only be strengthened through dedicated practice. This might be the coolest way ever to develop or introduce empathy in your students.

USE ANY VERSION OF MINECRAFT! Minecraft: Education Edition is now on Chromebooks, PC, Mac and iPad! This is a great experience to leave for a guest teacher when you are out for the day or even better for when you are in class and can see the magic happen yourself!

This Resouece: Twelve Minecraftian families have suffered hardships and your students are being called on to help them. Based on the Home and Garden TV's "Extreme Home Makeover" show where communities rally to build dream houses for the families of lost heroes, your students will do the same in Minecraft for fictitious families who have suffered school-appropriate hardships.

You assign or students choose one of the 12 families then after reading the list of suggested dream home features and concerns from the family they get to work building. (See example Families)

The entire duration of this project students stop thinking of themselves and truly experience the act of thinking of others. The dream homes created are incredible and the greatest moment for teachers is when they ask students why something was included, or not included, in a build. Reading comprehension, critical thinking, creativity, communication, and character skills are all on display for even your normally quietest students. Build empathy in your classrooms in a fun and empowering way with the Minecraft Empathy Experience. Share builds with fellow teachers, administrators and the world when done!
