A short lesson that teaches symmetry using the game Minecraft. The Minecraft build may be completed using any version of Minecraft. Students may complete the build even if the teacher has no knowledge of Minecraft. Simply hand students the student handout (which includes screenshots to help them with their build) and they can complete the lesson on their own. Teachers only need to be able to recognize symmetrical shapes! This lesson corresponds directly with the fourth grade standard:
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.4.G.A.3 Recognize a line of symmetry for a two-dimensional figure as a line across the figure such that the figure can be folded along the line into matching parts. Identify line-symmetric figures and draw lines of symmetry.
However, the build is easy enough for earlier grades, and due to the creative nature of Minecraft, completable by 5th and 6th graders as well.
The PDF includes: teacher instructions, student handout, screenshots, and a page for students to "research" the topic before building on Minecraft to learn about symmetry on their own.
