Students will measure their classroom to create floor plans that could be used to build a house in Minecraft. They will convert the measurements of the floor plan from feet to Minecraft blocks (approximately 3ft/1block). They will transfer their floor plans to graph paper shading in 1 grid for each Minecraft block that they would use to create their floor plan. Students with access to Minecraft at home or school are encouraged to create their house and take a screenshot to share with others. Students will answer questions on a Minecraft Unit Conversions handout. Students will then use their floor plan to count the Perimeter and Area in Minecraft blocks. They will use a calculator to divide Area by Perimeter. Students will collect the Area and Perimeter from other students’ projects, again solving Area ÷ Perimeter. Students will reflect on the similarities and differences in the outcome of this activity. Then students will create their own classroom floor plan using an on- line tool. They will use these plans to complete similar activities as they did above.
