Come experience one of the bedrock lessons in earth science and geology: mineral identification. This particular lesson pinpoints the specific content of luster and mineral light reflection. This is a dynamic activity that differentiates between both metallic and non-metallic lusters and specific mineral uses in everyday life based on their luster and other important mineral properties. This lab parallels very well with other traditional mineral labs and can be used as a replacement or reinforcement.
Present here is a very thorough and comprehensive delivery of mineral content covering metallic lusters and non-metallic lusters such as: dull, glassy, adamantine, earthy, greasy, silky, oily, resinous, and pearly. Specific minerals addressed are: gold, galena, silver, magnetite, graphite, hematite, cobalt, pyrite, titanium, fluorite, corundum, olivine, sulfur, feldspar, quartz, talc, mica, and calcite. Teachers are also given pedagogical independence in that they can dictate how much information to present to a student (students) using a teacher's choice method provided on the blank template.
This has been used as a pre-class, lab/activity, review, and assessment. This is an effective teaching tool one on one, in small groups, and as a class when using a Smart Board/Promethean Board/Projection.
