Integrate writing, science, informational text, drawing, oral communication, cooperative learning, comprehension, and fun into one lesson! Students will even have the chance to create their own sales pitch and logo about minerals! In this packet, students will answer questions in different ways about minerals using the prompts of Depth and Complexity. Never used or heard of the prompts of Depth and Complexity? No problem! Teacher suggestions/directions are included as well as answer sheets. The only materials you will need are information on minerals (textbook, articles, internet, etc.) and a pencil for each student. Optional: supplies for coloring.
Included in packet:
+ A note taking organizer in which students jot down important details and vocabulary and then draw, model or write down ways to remember the information. There is also a section for unanswered questions.
+(2) Depth & Complexity frames with questions/prompts. Prompts include both older and newer icons, plus one of the content imperatives.
+(1) Depth & Complexity frame embedded with cooperative learning structures
+ (2) Question and Answer format pages featuring 4 prompts
+ (2) Sets of Depth and Complexity/Content Imperative prompt task cards for cooperative learning activities (with and without a colorful background, in case you need to save ink)
+ Extension Activity Suggestions and Extension Activities
+ “Properties of Minerals Cartoons” extension activity (write & illustrate)
+ “Pitch This” extension activity (both with and without a decorative frame and lines for writing)
+ Sample answers (3 pages)
+ Suggestions for Use page (ideas on how to implement the lesson as well as the Cooperative Learning Structures, should you choose to go that route)
Not only for GATE Students:
Although this lesson uses GATE (Gifted and Talented) icons and frame, all activities can be used with students at any level. I've used Depth and Complexity frames with students ranging from gifted to special education, and all students have shown success! I actually used to teach a GATE class and a general ed class full of 4th graders, and they all enjoyed this lesson.
What's it all about?
Kids will discuss and find important details about the minerals, use the vocabulary a geologist/scientist would use, briefly define the properties of minerals, create their own mineral and describe its properties, explain ways people use minerals, choose a mineral and prove and identify it correctly to other scientists based on its properties, discuss tools and tests used on minerals, and compare and contrast two minerals.
Extension activities are also given, and two of the activities are included in the packet. In the first activity, students are asked to write to create cartoons about the properties of minerals and write a sentence about each. In the second activity, students are to design a sales pitch and logo about minerals. They will need to write persuasively about why people need to buy their mineral(s). Take this a step further, and have students present their pitch to the class!
