Product Description

This colorful and detailed PowerPoint and bundle covers the characteristics of minerals and the properties used for the identification of minerals.

Characteristics of minerals include naturally occurring, inorganic, solid, crystal shape and pure substance.

Properties used for testing include color, luster, hardness, streak, density, breakage, crystal shape and special properties.
Properties used for testing minerals also includes video links that help to demonstrate how each identification test is performed.

The super bundle also has a component of mineral identification on paper, in the lab and on two different tests.

Students are first given the opportunity to identify minerals using descriptions and two identification charts. Through the assignments "Mineral Treasures from the Earth", "Mineral Identification" and "Mineral ID Quiz", students will learn to use the clues given on paper along with the identification charts to correctly identify minerals.

Next, students can use the identification testing skills learned in the PowerPoint along with the identification skills learned in the assignment to perform a Mineral Identification Lab. You can choose any minerals and as many as you would like. I would select minerals such as: sulfur, talc, gypsum, quartz, feldspar, pyrite, copper, graphite, galena, hematite, calcite, or fluorite. These are some very common minerals, so pick what you have. I would choose 5-10 minerals at the most. I give students two chances at the correct answer so that they can learn. After they have tried to identify all of the given minerals, I mark the ones that are correct and then give them an opportunity to correct. I, then, take it for a grade. Ten minerals takes about 90 minutes so if you do ten, plan accordingly. The only equipment needed besides the minerals is: streak plate, penny, nail, and piece of glass.

Students then take two tests. The first test is general knowledge and the "on paper" identification portion. The second test is only proving that they can perform the tests (streak, hardness, etc.). It is not actually identifying. So again, you can select any minerals for this Mineral ID Lab Practical. In fact, you could use one mineral for several questions.
