Black History Month Activity

2 relatively quick research projects on notable musicians and scientists

PRODUCT #1: Mini Black History Research Project - Notable Musician Presentation

Quick mini-research Black History Month project to highlight notable African American musicians

Over 50 names of notable musicians to research!

Super quick project to incorporate Black History into your classroom!

Assign in Google Classroom or Apple Classroom!

Time is something that teachers never have enough of! This is a quick and easy mini-research project for students to present information on notable African American musicians. Students will learn about musicians that are not mainstream today, like Ella Fitzgerald, Scott Joplin, and Count Basie. Musicians range from R&B to ragtime to gospel to blues, and more. This product contains a teacher model file, a graphic organizer for student research, a list of 50+ notable musicians, and a template for an e-presentation. You can assign this mini-project through Google classroom by simply uploading the template into Google Slides, or you can have students work on it through Apple Classroom (in Keynote) or in Microsoft’s OneDrive. When they are finished with this great 1-day research project, students can post their slides to Seesaw or a class website. The fields on the graphic organizer match the e-presentation file, so transferring information should be easy for students. When I used this project in my classroom, I also had my students lip sync to the first 60 seconds of one of their popular songs during their presentation. They received extra credit if they sang the song.

PRODUCT #2: Mini Black History Research Project - Notable Scientist Presentation

Notable Scientists Mini-Research Project

Black History Month Activity

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION:

Over 30 names of notable scientists to research!

Quick and creative project to incorporate Black History into your classroom!

Cross-curricular with informational and persuasive writing!

Students can use PowerPoint, Slides, or KeyNote for the final products!

Graphic organizer, detailed directions, and scoring rubric included!

Time is something that teachers never have enough of! This is a creative and relatively quick mini-research project for students to present information on notable African American scientists. It will take about 30 minutes to find information, another 30 minutes to organize information, and then 30 or so minutes to design the advertisement. Students will research notable African American inventors, like Elijah McCoy, Granville Woods, and Patricia Bath. With their research, they will create an e-presentation in PowerPoint, Slides, or KeyNote with information on the invention, its impact, and an advertisement.

This product contains a teacher model file, a graphic organizer for student research, a list of 30+ notable scientists, detailed student directions for content on each slide in their final e-presentation file, and a scoring rubric. As a former 4th grade teacher, I know how important writing is for students, and how with guidance students will be more successful and focused in their writing. The graphic organizer is designed to guide students in developing an informational paragraph addressing the impact of the invention and then things they want to include in their persuasive advertisement.

When they are finished with this great 1-day research project, students can post their slides to Seesaw or a class website to share. The fields on the graphic organizer should really help students meet the expectations detailed on the instruction page. When I used this project in my 6th grade students, I had students create the presentation in Google Slides and share it with me – this was before I discovered the beauty of Google Classroom, which would have made it even easier to turn in the file. They enjoyed the project, which we did in place of a science lesson, and I loved seeing their creativity with their advertisements. It is a great idea to show some examples of ads to get students to notice things they should include.

Don’t delay! Celebrate Black History today!
