This guide was updated and expanded in November of 2016.
This is a two-week literature study for the book titled Day of the Blizzard, by Marietta Moskin. In this book, 12-year-old Katie travels through the Great Blizzard of 1888 to redeem an heirloom brooch from a pawnshop.
A mini-guide contains vocabulary activities, discussion questions, reading activities, extension activities, and an answer key.
This interactive guide enables parents/teachers to facilitate an oral discussion of this book, but it only provides space for one student to complete fill-in-the-blank activities. If you are interested in using this guide with more than one student, check out the options:
1) Reproducible sheets contain all of the fill-in-the-blank activities: Mini-Guide for Juniors: Day of the Blizzard Reproducibles
2) This guide is available in workbook format; in this format there is room for students to: a) write the answers to all of the questions and b) complete all of the activities:
Mini-Guide for Juniors: Day of the Blizzard Workbook
One of the post reading activities in this guide is to write a sequel. After your student has written a sequel, check out the free sequel:
The Wedding -- A Sequel to Day of the Blizzard
Mini-guides were originally designed for homeschoolers; they are also used in schools and co-ops. For more information about Mini-Guides, check the mini-guide page of the CNS website:
