This mini unit is a collection of 4 poetry lessons. They are as follows, witha brief description:
Creating Poetry About Ourselves: Students will be given a quick introduction to some of the elements of poetry (simile, metaphor, etc.). Students will also analyze and discuss a few other poems written about the self from the perspective of the poet. Lastly, students will brainstorm different aspects about their own lives, which will then be used to create a poem about themselves.
Poetry as a Celebration of the Self: In this lesson, students will analyze poems to study the literary techniques and themes used. Students will then brainstorm and create poems that reflect who they are and where they are from, with a focus on relating their life experiences.
Creating Celebratory Poems: In this lesson students will analyze and discuss several different celebratory poems, with a strong focus on family. Students will then create poems that announce to the world who they are, what they love, and why they love it.
Concrete Poems - Analyzing and Creating: In this lesson students will analyze a concrete peom, paying specific attention to the visual style the poem uses to reflect its primary themes. Students will then have an opportunity to brainstorm and create their own concrete poem.
