This common core aligned, mini-unit will address poetry, using mentor texts to guide students in writing their own poems. Students will immerse themselves in reading and writing poetry. Each student will have their own “poetry anthology.”
Through this unit, students will understand visualizing as an essential comprehension tool when reading poetry. They will then “see the world as poets,” trying to paint this same mental image in their readers’ minds.
Students will be introduced to line breaks, stanzas, rhythm, repetition, and figurative language as tools they can use to get their message across in poetry. Students will move from “looking closely” poems about everyday things, to making their poems sound and feel “just right,” to experimenting with figurative language such as similes and extended metaphors.
