Here's a little poetry to introduce the concept, or to supplement with a novel unit.
This is a suitable unit for MS students who have not previously studied a lot of poetry.
Whitman’s “Song of Myself” is composed of excerpts suitable for middle school. Students will also read Emily Dickinson's "I am Nobody," and Walter de la Mare's "Me."
These poems work well together in theme, and the kids can usually relate to them easily. You might even want to use these as a pre-reading for any novel that focuses on individuality/conformity, like The Giver, The Outsiders, or anything else you teach!
There is a vocabulary preview (with answer key), a pre-reading prediction using a sentence frame, post-reading quote chart, analysis questions, journal entries with choice of questions, and of course, the poems on a single sided handout.
This should take a few days to complete. Feel free to use it for a whole group, small group, or individual work.
