In my school district, we have a shortened fall break, which leaves us with a 2-day school week. Since I didn't want to start any new curriculum with only 2 days to finish it, I decided to create a miniature version of a Reading Workshop with my first graders.
The first day is all about choosing books at the appropriate reading level. I do this by having students predict whether books will be too hard, too easy, or just right, and sorting them accordingly. Then, we read Goldilocks and the 3 Bears and sort them again! This includes handouts, and 4 posters for classroom use.
The second day is all about predicting what books will be about and sorting them appropriately. This includes an informal lesson plan outline, handouts, and a class writing activity.
I hope this helps you teach some fundamental literacy skills in your classroom. If you enjoy this, please subscribe/rate! Thanks and happy teaching!
