This activity has students brainstorm character traits for the character of Summer from Wonder by R.J. Palacio. Once they have finished the brainstorming, students read a short, unfinished story through Summer's perspective. The story breaks off at a climactic moment, and the student is responsible for writing a brief ending to the situational story. Following this, the students are asked to cite evidence from the novel to support how they chose for Summer to act in the situation. This activity promotes students to think deeply about characterization and character motives. It has been a great activity for sharing and opening discussions. Students come away with a better grasp of the depth of the reading process.
