The MIW strategy helps students analyze and understand the theme or central idea of a text. This strategy works well with both independent and dependent readers. It is designed for students in grades 6-12. This strategy forces students to go back into the text to first identify what they believe is the most important word and second to justify their choice with evidence of where the word was used. Students who have trouble going deeper into the text and can usually only answer literal questions will benefit greatly from this strategy.
