Phonological errors are errors in various patterns of speech. These patterns persist long after it is developmentally appropriate.
Deaffrication is a phonological process whereby an affricate is replaced by a fricative sound. This process changes the meaning and understanding of words spoken. Initial position words are included in this product.
Minimal pairs are two words that differ by one sound or feature. This difference changes the sound and meaning of the word.
Minimal pairs as a therapy approach allows you to:
Present words to the individual to determine that they can hear the subtle differences in the words
Practice two different words to focus on the differences in the sounds
Discuss the different meanings and how that impacts understanding
Practice at both the word and the sentence level
CARDS: The cards can be printed and laminated. Cut the cards and then either store them or attach to a ring for organization. Use the cover of the cards provided at the bottom of the page for further organization. A blank page is provided as a place to store pictures. You can make several copies of this or have just one as a storage for the pictures you want to use that day. Add Velcro to each box on the sheet and Velcro to the back of the pictures. Attach a picture to each available box.
INTERACTIVE BOOKS: Cut the books on the dashed line and laminate. Punch a hole in the top left and bottom (optional) to bind. Add a piece of Velcro to the empty box at the bottom of the page. Add the opposite type of Velcro to the back of the cards. The Interactive Books can be used in a variety of ways:
Practice the two words at the top for a review
Read the sentence and add the correct word to the box
Read the whole sentence with the word at end
Collect data and scaffold with the pictures at the top of the page as necessary
WORD LIST: A word list is provided for your reference. Can be used when doing a quick screening.
DATA COLLECTION: Use the data collection sheet provided to monitor the progress of the student. Scaffold as necessary. Use the notes section for percentages, successful strategies as well as areas of difficulty.
HOMEWORK: You can print the book and send it home “as is” for homework. At home the student can practice the words. They can then read the sentence and write in the correct word in the empty box. The student can then practice saying the word at the sentence level.
