Minimal Pairs Interactive Unit for Final Consonants
Are you looking for an effective way to target the phonological process of final consonant deletion? This mini-unit provides multiple activities to keep your students engaged in the session. This resource uses the effective therapy approach minimal pairs. Minimal pairs are a set of words that differ by one sound (example: boo-boot). This is a powerful tool to use with students because they see how an incorrect sound changes a word. The visuals in this unit provide immediate feedback for correct vs. incorrect productions.
I provided an introduction to the unit with ideas for visual and tactile cues. I also included detailed instructions for each part of the product.
*NO PRINT discrimination activity (to use on an iPad, tablet, or computer). The student will listen to the words and then tap the picture that has the final consonant or "end sound." They are given immediate feedback with a “you’re right” or a “try again” screen.
*Partner Feedback Cards: The student will say the word and the partner (parent, teacher, therapist) will point to the word they hear. This is a powerful tool because students will gain an understanding that the word changes if they omit the final consonant. It is a great visual tool (color & b/w) I send the b/w copy home with the student (with the included caregiver/teacher letter).
*Crisp and Clear Flashcards:These cards can be used as a stand alone activity. They can also be used with any of the practice worksheets to reinforce with the minimal pair if the student produces an error. These come in color and b/w. I send the b/w copy home with the student for home practice.
*16 NO PREP Worksheets!
*Dot & Discriminate: The student will listen to both words in each box and dot the picture that has the final consonant.
*Find It-Dot it-Say It: The student will find the pictures that have final consonants
and dot them. The student will practice the word after they find it.
*Say It & Dot It: The student will practice each word five times and dot/color them as they say it. I use my flashcards with these sheets to reinforce with a minimal pair if needed.
*Color by Sound: The student will color the picture according to the key and practice
each word as they find it. I use my flashcards with these sheets to reinforce with a minimal pair if needed.
