Mining Minerals is a hands on science activity I created for my students in order to have them realize the negative effects mining can have on the Earth's surface. Students will use toothpicks and water to pull out the various items from cookies. They will be required to make observations about the cookie before and after mining. Also, there are questions the students must answer after they are finished with the activity. This activity can be used as a center activity or completed with the whole class with the students working in groups or teams. This activity was designed for 3rd graders but will work well with many other grade levels. It meets the Georgia Performance Standards (GPS) for 3rd grade science. Included with this worksheet are teacher instructions for how to best utilize this activity.
