This project is designed to assist your learners in gaining a better understanding of the 87 counties of Minnesota. Dependent on your needs and interests this project can easily be worked on independently or in a group setting.
Each county has been formatted into the form of a bookmark. Simply print these pages and cut (there are four per page). To cut down on total pages, the listing of all 87 counties (designed to be the back of all bookmarks) precedes the individual pages.
After learners have selected their county (via taking a bookmark or you have handed one to them), they will need to locate where their county is in the state of Minnesota. Have a Minnesota county map available at this time.
You will see through the learner handout found after the bookmarks that they are required to research their county beginning with three websites. These include the county website, state of Minnesota website, and the United States Census Bureau.
They continue their research through online sources, printed materials, and their local librarian or historian. The focus on the librarian rather than the library is to encourage learners to use their resources wisely. Their local librarian or historian is likely to be a good use of their time in terms of locating appropriate materials in a timely fashion. Please schedule a time for learners to meet with a local professional.
Please visit www.circulatingknowledge.com if you would like a learning guide for students to work from.
Along with a works cited page, learners will need to include a lengthly list of facts and items that can be found on the student printout. There is also extensive note-taking and editing that will need to accompany this project. An excellent opportunity to work on handwriting!
Furthermore, learners will make the decision as to how to present their information via four choices: written report, poster, presentation, or brochure.
Additionally, this PBA includes Minnesota bookmarks highlighting the state and the seven area codes. Enjoy!
Please email me at firstname.lastname@example.org with questions or comments. I'm happy to add or delete elements in order for the handouts to work best with your learners. I can also make bookmarks highlighting your city and/or county if you want something extra. Thank you!
