We spend a lot of time teaching students to read for meaning, so when our students are asked to read nonsense words their reaction is often to discredit their own reading because the word doesn't make sense. I use "monster words" in my classroom to teach nonsense word decoding skills within a context that continuously reminds students that these are made up and pretend words.
Children are motivated by the monster images as they collect their cards. In fact, this work has lured in quite a few of my reluctant readers to the point that they beg for the practice!
This set includes: instructions, a progress monitor graph for students to complete, 48 monster-themed CVC nonsense word cards in easy-to-read font.
