Directions: The teacher sets the timer for one minute. Students will write in silence for one minute, and the pause when the timer stops. Then the teacher sets the timer for another minute, but this time the students try to focus on writing when the teacher does everything to distract the students. When the timer ends, the students pause writing again. On the last part, the students write in silence again for one minute. The words in each section are counted for what is written each minute. This will give the Words Per Minute (WPM) that was written. Children of preschool to middle school I have taught have enjoyed this activity. They especially enjoy when I have done the distraction section and try to get their attention away from them writing.
