Students will write a sentence that contains a misplaced modifier in it. The goal of the contest is to create the funniest misplaced modifier. Students have a riot trying to craft a sentence and image that combine for the greatest humorous effect.

This is a fantastic review activity after you've already taught misplaced modifiers. When we did it with our classes, they were laughing and showing each other their examples to see if they were correct and if they were funny. Then they'd revise and go for a funnier one. We were, frankly, amazed at how involved the students were with this. It worked so well!
Side note: My school has a policy that Honors students who don't keep A's or B's choose to drop from Honors classes. Very interestingly, I displayed the top 3 finalists from each of my classes, and all 5 of my students who dropped the class that quarter ended up in the finalists. This showed me that certainly they understood the misplaced modifiers material, maybe they just weren't engaged enough...because they could prove it when they wanted to.
