Need a quick misplaced modifiers lesson?
This three page pdf file provides an explanatory handout with practice sentences, a four-question multiple choice assessment, and the key for the practice sentences and assessment.
The explanatory handout has three main parts, as follows:
* Defining Misplaced Modifiers (What is a modifier? Why do we use modifiers? How can I tell if a modifier is misplaced?)
* Identifying Misplaced Modifiers (gives two examples of misplaced modifiers and corrections)
* Correcting Misplaced Modifiers (five practice sentences for students to rewrite with your help)
I like to ask my students to read aloud and copy notes from parts I and II of the handout, which should take about five to ten minutes.
Then, they complete the practice sentences and we review them, which is another five to ten minutes. Finally, they complete the assessment which is another five to ten minutes.
Five to ten minutes may seem like a broad range for each section, but I say five to ten minutes because my students' writing and reading speed varies substantially. I allow my faster workers to move on to the next step only after I have checked for correctness in their work. If they get all of the practice sentences correct, then they can move on to the assessment before the rest of us. However, if they missed any of the practice items, I will tell them to look back over them, and that some of them (or maybe just one of them) needs to be corrected (I don't tell them which ones, I let them figure it out or review it with the rest of us.)
Please check out the preview, and thanks for considering my work.
