Product Description
Miss Nelson is Missing is one of my go-to texts for back to school. It can be used for so many lessons, but is perfect for teaching about inferences, drawing conclusions, using illustrations, and reviewing character traits. These activities were created specifically to review those skills plus compare and contrast, summary, and sequencing. They were designed intentionally to be very simple to use with little to no-prep on your end. I used these as center/station activities after using the text as a mentor text during reading workshop lessons.

Includes:

1. Teacher Notes. Several pages of notes explaining what is included, the standards this resource covers, and how to use the materials in your classroom.

2. Student “I Can” Statement Sheet. One sheet that states what students can do through the activities provided.

3. Parts of Speech Word Cards and Activities. Students sort words from the story by parts of speech and then use the cards to complete the following activities:
- Write Sentences: Students create their own sentences using at least one noun, verb, and adjective from the story in each.
- Categorizing: Students choose 12-15 words that go together in some way, categorize, and then explain why they’ve grouped words together.
- Fictional story: Students choose 10-15 words they think are interesting, plan a fictional story, and then write and illustrate their work.

4. Story Sequencing. Sentence strips containing important ideas from the story are arranged in order according to where they can be found in the text. Can be used as a partner, small group, or whole group activity.

5. Story Summary. Students practice summarizing skills by writing a summary of the story. Use with the sequencing strips as practice or without as an assessment.

6. Inferring with Illustrations. Students make inferences using the information found in illustrations.

7. Compare and Contrast: Characters. Students compare and contrast two characters from the story using details from the text. Then, using their completed Venn, students write sentences using comparing and contrasting vocabulary. A second activity is included for students to compare and contrast their class with the students from Room 207.

8. All About Characters Chart. Students record descriptions of characters, character traits, and reflect on how characters change throughout the story.

9. Discussion Questions and Response Pages. 11 discussion questions and response pages for students to record their answers. Topics include: conflict, resolution, favorite character, compare and contrast, retelling, lesson, agree/disagree, inferring, and more.

10. The Perfect Teacher. After reading about a kind teacher and a mean one, students write about their idea of the perfect teacher.

11. Story Cards. Students can use to retell the story, help with sequencing, creative writing, and more.

12. Answer Keys. Answers are included for the word sort and sequencing activities.
