Students will engage in a hands on experience in which they will be experimenting with how to determine what the missing value in a mathematical problem. In the first activity, the students will be paired up and they will have 10 math blocks (or other materials) and one of the partners will hide some blocks under the cup. The other partner will then determine how many blocks are hiding under the cup. They will fill out the equation on their handout.
In headbands, the students will play a modern board game with a twist. The students will be in groups of 3-4. Two people will draw medals from the pile and hold them at their forehead without looking at their number. The other 1-2 students who are not holding medals will tell the two holders what the TOTAL number is by adding up the two medal numbers. The students holding the medals will then determine what the number on their own head is by knowing the total (target number) as well as their partners number. Once they have figured it out, they will record their equations and numbers on their worksheet.
