This lesson and activity is based on Loreen Leedy's Missing Math - A Number Mystery. In this story, suddenly all the numbers in the world disappear and life completely changes! After reading the book (although the lesson can be done without reading the book; I suggest brainstorming possible responses first if you do not read it), students are given a time of day. Each student must label a clock with the given time, draw a picture of what might happen at that time of day if all the numbers in the world disappeared, and then write a sentence or two describing what is happening in the picture. After sharing responses, the pictures can be displayed using the included bulletin board sign.
This activity includes the lesson description, worksheet for students to draw and write on, and a bulletin board sign.
Great beginning of the year assessment and introduction to the importance of math and numbers!
