Supporting Indigenous Resources for Inclusive Learning for Elementary and High School Students

Comprehension reading strategies used in this unit are: connection, visualization, question, and infer.

Included in this unit are articles and links to the Highway of Tears, where students can examine, identify factors that place women in positions to be victimized, and compose letters to their political representatives campaigning for change.

Assessment rubrics are customized for each lesson.

Specific Big Ideas from BC's New Curriculum Grades 5-12, that pertain to this novel study, have been identified and listed for assessment purposes.

Missing Nimama, written by Melanie Forence and illustrated by Francois Thisdale, is an award winning, and heartbreaking story about a mother's loss, touching on the issue of the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls.

To obtain a copy of this story and others like it, I recommend checking out Strong Nations, an online bookstore supplying indigenous and Native American books. Not only do they have an extensive selection, they provide themed book bundles for all age ranges.
