This is an activity for a Phonics Table in the EYFS / Reception classroom (or Literacy Center in Kindergarten, Grade 1 or Grade 2 ).
Each card has a word and picture on from the Phase 3 Phonics Word List from Letters & Sounds. The phoneme to be practised in each word is missing and there is a blank circle in its place. There are a set of matching phoneme discs to fill the blank circles and complete the words as well as a recording sheet where the children can copy out the words.
The cards and phoneme discs need to be laminated and cut out. The children can then match the discs with the correct cards to complete the words. This bundle includes cards for all of the Phase 3 phonemes: j, v, w, x, y, z, qu, ch, sh, th, ng, ai, ee, igh, oa, oo, or, ur, ar, ow, oi, ear, air, ure and er.
You can replace the phoneme discs with bottle tops - you just need to write the phonemes onto the lids with a permanent marker pen.
There is a recording sheet for each set of 4 phonemes for the children to write the words on when they have matched them. I put several copies of these sheets onto clipboards on the phonics table for the children to access independently. (I also sent some recording sheets home as homework to help the children revise the words. I wrote in the words for the lower ability writers so they just had to fill in the missing phonemes.)
