If you're the kind of teacher who's always on the hunt for ways to keep math practice challenging, effective, and FUN for your first grade students, you'll love this set of 24 missing subtrahend elimination logic riddle task cards!

Choosing from four numbers on each card, your students will determine Puppy's Secret Number by solving to eliminate three of the options. With each riddle task card they do, your students will solve for the missing subtrahend three times. They'll be having so much fun searching for the secret number that they won’t even realize that they’ve completed 72 problems in all!

Because the cute puppy graphics aren't seasonal, you'll find yourself using this set at any time during the school year!

A student recording page, answer key, and themed number lines are also included. Plus, there's a board game for even more practice with missing subtrahends!

Here are some ways that you might use these task cards in your classroom:
* Use in a math center for individual or partner work
* Use with your document camera for whole class review or to focus attention at the
beginning of a math lesson
* Use as a skills review rotation (aka "Scoot"), individually or with partners, with
students moving to stations around the classroom to solve the clues
* Use for morning “bell ringers”
* Use as challenge work or for early finishers
* Use as an activity with classroom volunteers – they can complete as few or as
many as time allows!
* Print in black and white to use in interactive notebooks. Give one puzzle to each
student and have them write or talk about their thinking in solving the riddle.

Here's what buyers said about math riddle task cards:

Just what I was looking for! The clues help my students think about how numbers are connected and it engages them to solve the mystery number! Great resource. Thank you.

This provided my students with just the right amount of challenge I was looking for! It got them thinking about this concept in a way they hadn't before. Thank you for creating this resource!

Determine the unknown whole number in an addition or subtraction equation relating three whole numbers. For example, determine the unknown number that makes the equation true in each of the equations 8 + ? = 11, 5 = ▯ - 3, 6 + 6 = ▯.
Add and subtract within 20, demonstrating fluency for addition and subtraction within 10. Use strategies such as counting on; making ten (e.g., 8 + 6 = 8 + 2 + 4 = 10 + 4 = 14); decomposing a number leading to a ten (e.g., 13 - 4 = 13 - 3 - 1 = 10 - 1 = 9); using the relationship between addition and subtraction (e.g., knowing that 8 + 4 = 12, one knows 12 - 8 = 4); and creating equivalent but easier or known sums (e.g., adding 6 + 7 by creating the known equivalent 6 + 6 + 1 = 12 + 1 = 13).
