Having trouble with students turning in their homework late? Try this!
1. Print a bunch of copies of the document and place them somewhere where students can access them easily in the classroom.
2. Instruct students that they will have to fill in a "Missing Work Log" each time they do NOT turn in their homework. For each day the homework is late 5 points (or whatever amount of points you decide) will be deducted.
3. If the student turns in their homework after the due date, fill in the "For the Teacher" section with the date they turned it in and the amount of points which will be deducted. Staple the "Missing Work Log" to the homework and place it in the student's file.
4. If the student never turns in their homework, write it in the "Comments" section and place the "Missing Work Log" in the student's file.
This is an excellent way to create a sense of responsibility in students and to keep track of students' work. I have also found it handy in Parent Teacher Conferences when I have to explain why the child received a zero or a point deduction. Parents can see for themselves the excuse students gave for their late or missing work.
