Challenge your students to take on "Mission Measurement"! In this fun, multi-week homework project, students carefully measure and bring items to school to share and compare. Missions include finding object that are: 1 inch, 1 foot, 1 yard, 1 ounce, 1 pound, 1 centimeter, 1 meter, 1 gram and 1 kilogram. Fun awards inspire kids to get creative! Included is an easy-to-assemble poster so you can quickly create a learning center where kids can explore with measurement!
Make a line plot to display a data set of measurements in fractions of a unit (1/2, 1/4, 1/8). Solve problems involving addition and subtraction of fractions by using information presented in line plots. For example, from a line plot find and interpret the difference in length between the longest and shortest specimens in an insect collection.
Measure and estimate liquid volumes and masses of objects using standard units of grams (g), kilograms (kg), and liters (l). Add, subtract, multiply, or divide to solve one-step word problems involving masses or volumes that are given in the same units, e.g., by using drawings (such as a beaker with a measurement scale) to represent the problem.
Estimate lengths using units of inches, feet, centimeters, and meters.
Measure the length of an object by selecting and using appropriate tools such as rulers, yardsticks, meter sticks, and measuring tapes.
