Description

What Is mitosis and the cell cycle? How does the process of mitosis create new genetically identical cells? What is causes cancer?

This comprehensive and clear 2-page reading comprehension will introduce cell cycle, mitosis and mitotic phases. The additional interactive notebook activity will give students an opportunity to practice their mitosis skills in an interactive way. Your students will learn by reading the mitosis passage and then answer 2-pages of questions about the reading. To sum things up, students cut and paste the jumbled graphic phases of mitosis into their science notebooks in correct order and add titles and descriptions of each phase.

*TIP!*

If You Choose to use this as a Close & Careful Reading with INB (I do with my lower level biology students), here is the way I find most successful:

-First: Do a cold read and instruct students to highlight important information.

-Second: Do a class read and have students share what they highlighted

-Third: Have students write the answers to their reading questions.

-Fourth: Students share with partners and then share out!

-Fifth: Students work in small groups to each make an interactive notebook page!

Standards

to see state-specific standards (only available in the US).
NGSSHS-LS1-4
Use a model to illustrate the role of cellular division (mitosis) and differentiation in producing and maintaining complex organisms. Assessment does not include specific gene control mechanisms or rote memorization of the steps of mitosis.
NGSSMS-LS1-2
Develop and use a model to describe the function of a cell as a whole and ways the parts of cells contribute to the function. Emphasis is on the cell functioning as a whole system and the primary role of identified parts of the cell, specifically the nucleus, chloroplasts, mitochondria, cell membrane, and cell wall. Assessment of organelle structure/function relationships is limited to the cell wall and cell membrane. Assessment of the function of the other organelles is limited to their relationship to the whole cell. Assessment does not include the biochemical function of cells or cell parts.
By the end of grade 10, read and comprehend science/technical texts in the grades 9–10 text complexity band independently and proficiently.
Translate quantitative or technical information expressed in words in a text into visual form (e.g., a table or chart) and translate information expressed visually or mathematically (e.g., in an equation) into words.
