Looking for simple, yet engaging activities for the Middle School Math classroom? This particular activity is called the Mix and Match. It's super easy to use, gets kids moving around and allows them to interact with each other through the material.
Each student is given a card and has to find their "matches." In this case, the topic is conversions so each student receives a card with either a fraction, decimal or percent on it. They must find the other two people in the room that have the equivalent number to their card. So if a student has a fraction, they are looking for a decimal and a percent that equals their fraction. All fractions use a denominator of 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, or 10. There are only a few that are repeating decimals, but those do not have to be used. The activity includes the cards as well as many helpful hints and variations that can be used.
This can used at many grade levels, but is geared toward 6th and 7th grade. It takes between 5 and 20 minutes depending on which variations you choose to do.
