This activity allows students to show their understanding of decomposing numbers by creating a kite with all of the expressions written on the bows. This activity can be used as a post-assessment at the end of your decomposition unit.
You will need to run off all kite materials ahead of time on colored construction paper (kite and bows). Students will create their own decomposition kite by choosing any number 6, 7, 8, 9 or 10. They will write the number in the center of the kite, choose a tool for decomposing, and write the expressions on the bows to attach to their kite string.. All pieces will have been cut out ahead of time and the ribbon will have been glued to the kite so that students have more time to work on decomposing their numbers.
This activity aligns to the following common core standard:
K.OA.4 For any number from 1 to 9, find the number that makes 10 when added to the given number, e.g., by using objects or drawings, and record the answer with a drawing or equation.
