Product Description
This is a group activity designed to help students collaborate to learn Transition metal, Polyatomic, Binary ionic nomenclature and Covalent nomenclature. I use this activity in the middle of my nomenclature unit (after everything has been introduced) as a break from the usual practice problems. This is not effective at the beginning of the unit, but could be used as a wrap-up/review activity. There are too many questions and too much frustration results, in my experience, if I try this activity before students have some grasp of/practice with nomenclature. I usually copy some kind of bell work or warm-up on the back of these sheets, and then have the students flip the sheet and move to the whiteboard designated by the group number to incorporate a little movement into the day. Students then work together in their “new” group to solve the problem. Once the problem is checked (by me or a trusted student/student helper with an answer key, included) and verified as correct, students recreate the grid on the white board and fill it in.
I have also posted “secret” answer keys (not hidden, just not pointed out. Hiding in plain sight, if you will) about the room and have student groups pick a member to check their group’s work.

Once the groups have their grids filled in, I have them go to other groups’ whiteboards to fill in the remaining grids on their paper.

If the students are not starting in groups or seated in groups, you can simply place the white boards around the room and have the students meet at their white board.

I usually give (and students usually take) about 20-25 min. for this activity.

Students should be able to attack nomenclature problems on their own before doing this activity and have access to polyatomic ion lists and transition metal ions lists.

Students can also check their answers on the answer keys for the other groups’ problems, if desired.

I can send you this doc in MSWord format if desired.

Please include “Mixed Naming Gallery Walk” in the text or the title so I can send you the correct file.

FYI- I put between each sheet and a between worksheets and answer key. If the formatting messes up for you, that might be a cause.

If you are struggling with adding your content, I can make your changes for you if you give me a clear picture (scan/take picture of your manually edited version?) of what changes you would like to see in the document.
