This game is a great center or review activity. It uses strategy and number sense.
The base game was the adding to find the greater sum. I have added three variations where they add, but need the lowest sum, subtract for the greatest difference, and subtract for the lowest difference. Each of these require them to think about the numbers and apply what they know about fractions.
It can be made easier or more difficult by using 6 sided, 9 sided, or larger sided dice.
The subtraction can become challenging when it is a mixed number that may require regrouping in order to solve. Since they are placing numbers as they go, the larger fraction part might not necessarily be first.
Skills that may be involved are: changing improper fractions to a mixed number, simplifying fractions, comparing fractions and mixed numbers, adding and subtracting mixed numbers, and regrouping mixed numbers.
