Teach students to convert mixed numbers to improper fractions with pizza! Students start by drawing pictures to represent the amount of pizza. Guided questions help students think about how many slices there are and what that might look like as a fraction. This activity culminates with students identifying a mathematical process for converting mixed numbers to improper fractions without pictures.
I typically use this during whole class instruction as an investigation. We start with the first problem together, then I have students work in small groups and bring the class back together for the conclusion.
