Kids who struggle with word problems struggle with distractors. Throwing in an extra number throws students off track, or worse, into a panic. Before they, once again, try to put a number that doesn't belong into a solution, they should practice a strategy called Slash the Trash.
These 20 mixed operation problems, Core aligned to (mostly) fourth but (also) fifth grades give students a chance to practice identifying 'trash' numbers - those that aren't needed in a story problem - and slashing them out.
Answer sheets, for both identifying the trash and solving the problems, are included.
