I designed this unit as a fun way to focus on sentence construction and writing during the holiday season! What kiddo wouldn’t love to unscramble these fun sentences and write the stories to go with these fun prompts?
There are several parts to this unit. The first part is a pocket chart
activity that has the children unscramble the mixed up sentences that can be done as a whole group activity and then put in a center
(response sheet for center activity included). You could even use it as morning work for the weeks leading up to Christmas break., having the children add a sentence or to their response sheet each morning.
The next part is designed as a center activity. After laminating the
mats and cutting out the gingerbread cookies with words, the children use the gingerbread “sentence” building mats to read, build and then write the sentence using dry erase markers (red and green?). There is also another type of mat that has the children pick their own sentence to build with the provided gingerbread cookies. I have also included a response sheet for the children to also write the sentence after it has been “built” so that he/she can keep track of the sentences he/she has already completed. I have include 20 cut, paste, write and illustrate sentence scramble worksheets! And lastly, after building,
unscrambling and writing, I have included some fun writing prompts to use for the children to write and illustrate their own Gingerbread stories!
It is common core aligned and covers these standards:
SL.K.1 I can participate conversations with my friends.
SL.K.4 I can describe things and events.
SL.K.5 I can add drawings to add details.
LK.1 I can print my letters.
RF.K3 I can read my sight words.
RF.K1 I can construct a sentence.
A fun way to focus on writing and sentence construction! A great way to incorporate holiday fun and activities and keep an academic purpose!
