How are area and perimeter different? Kids discover the answer through this hands-on activity. Measuring and comparing the area and perimeter of shapes assembled in a square and shapes built into a monster of their own creation leads to understanding of the two concepts.
Only basic classroom materials are needed to complete the activity. The children each need scissors, glue, paper and rulers. Crayons or markers to color their creations make more fun, but are not necessary to complete the comparison.
This three page activity includes a set of patterned tangrams to measure and cut apart, monster eyes and mouths for decoration, comprehension questions and a chart to record results.
Help your kids understand area and perimeter with the help of the mixed up monsters.
