It is a bright summer day and perfect barbecuing weather. You have invited all of your friends to come over and enjoy some extra special grilled treats. As you get ready to fire up the grill and rock your super barbecuing skills, you notice you are missing all the essential ingredients. Now you must dash to the store and pick up the necessary ingredients to keep your title as King of the Grill.
Students must start in the backyard and make their way to the title as King of the Grill by rolling the dice. On each space a student lands, they must collect a Barbecue Day card and read the mixed vowel word families. If the students are able to read the words correctly, they may collect an ingredient of their choice on the Barbecue Essential card. If a student lands on a space with a fire, he/she have to move back 1 space because he/she burnt his/her burger on the grill. The player to make it to the end first with the most ingredients wins the title King of the Grill.
In this Smarten-Up file folder game, students will practice reading mixed vowel word families -ill, -ell, -all. Each card has a word from each family which encourages the student to differentiate between the different vowel sounds. Teachers can encourage students to create sentences with the words, find rhymes, or think about word meaning.
*print additional Barbecue Essential cards depending on the number of players.
