In this lesson students will be exploring mixtures of solids.
The lesson is designed as a math-science lesson.
This means the concept of mixtures is explored through use of and representation of fractional numbers. The equipment list given for the exploration is for students to use to make the problems more tangible.
The mathematics involved in this lesson is representing parts of a mixture as fractional numbers.
The lesson introduces the term ‘alloy’ as a mixture of metals with other elements that can only be separated under high temperatures.
Students will learn names of some alloys, and which elements make up the alloys as well as apply chemical symbols of some elements.
The exploration is based on multiple representations where students read, draw, and use fractional numbers.
This lesson plan includes:
---Detailed instructions for the teacher
---TEN printable problems to be used in the exploration,
---Card-sort activity to introduce the concept of mixtures
