Moby Dick by Herman Melville

This lesson makes a great sub plan!!

This lesson accompanies the 1998 Moby Dick movie starring Patrick Stewart. For a more in depth look at Moby Dick that includes everything here plus an excerpt from the novel, reading guide and vocabulary for excerpt, instructions and rubric for cause/effect essay, vocabulary quiz, and more, visit Moby Dick.

It includes a 20 question, multiple-choice quiz to give after students view the movie. The quiz comes in 2 version to deter cheaters. The questions are the same, but the answer choices have been scrambled. An editable PowerPoint of the quiz is also included in case you wish to make changes.

Next, students have the option to fill in a graphic organizer of the causes and effects of Ahab’s obsession with the whale or create their own visual to demonstrate that information. There is an answer key for the graphic organizer and an example of the visual. Both options get students synthesizing information from the movie; however, the second option challenges students to not only think critically but also creatively.

Finally, students have the option to gather information from the text – in this case non-print text – to determine if Herman Melville was a dark or regular Romantic. Students will analyze, synthesize, and evaluate to come to a conclusion.

The time frame of the lesson does not include the time to watch the movie. The movie lasts approximately 2 hours. The time for the lesson activities vary depending on which options you want to do with your students.
