Product Description
This Mock House of Reps has been years in the making. It's worked very well in my class and although it does take up a good bit of class-time, student feedback and AP scores indicate that it's a success. Students become familiar with the structure of Congress, how committees work, how a bill becomes law, and the problems within each of these that would be difficult to get them to understand without experiencing it firsthand. I chose the House (as opposed to the Senate) because I wanted the position of Speaker to be emphasized. This simulation also lends itself to a great discussion on the differences between Senate and House debates.
This file is designed to be printed and handed to students at the beginning of the Mock Congress so they have all of the information they need throughout the simulation. Included are:
*Rules and Procedures for the Mock Congress (including information on motions and voting)
*All available positions, with responsibilities, listed in the order in which they are elected in the simulation
*An agenda with both in-class and at-home activities listed. The simulation is slated to last for approximately 8 full class periods but can be modified as-needed
*An assignment to get them familiar with the four committees they will be working with
*Information on how to write a bill and a template that they should follow (with a link of where they can find current bills up for debate in the House)
*Guidelines for what to do each day in their committees
*A Bill Review Form that committees should fill out for each proposed bill they see
*A student reflection form to complete when they are done in their committees that asks them about their experience
