Although this project is structured to culminate in a simulated “trial” type proceeding, its primary mission is not about law or legal trials specifically. There is no need for background or instruction about laws or rules applicable to legal proceedings. Instead, the project is meant to develop investigation, advocacy, and critical thinking skills in a context that students can easily relate to and apply in a variety of contexts. You can adapt either the facts or the scope to suit your students and circumstances. You can allocate 2-3 days or expand to make it longer depending on the length of the class period you have available. How long you spend on it will depend on how much you want to do in class versus out of class.
